About Springfield, Tennessee
Springfield is a city of 18,782 people and the county seat of Robertson County, in Middle Tennessee close to the state's northern border. By 1798 Thomas Johnson had surveyed the new county seat and marked out its town lots, and buyers paid eight dollars for each one.
Two main highways now carry traffic around the old downtown. U.S. 41 once ran through the center on what is now Main Street, until it moved to the new four-lane Memorial Boulevard around 1961. U.S. 431 shared that route and then shifted to Tom Austin Highway around 1983.
- The first woman mayorIn the election of November 8, 2016, Vice Mayor Ann Schneider beat Buzzy Poole by just 38 votes. A month later she took office as Springfield's first female mayor. Voters gave her a second term in 2020. In 2024 Poole won the rematch by 303 votes.
- The Springfield Blanket MakersIn 1923 Springfield had its own minor league baseball team. The Blanket Makers played in the Kentucky-Illinois-Tennessee League.
- A school for the freedThe American Missionary Association ran a school in Springfield for people freed from slavery. Its principal was Alice Vassar LaCour, a teacher and singer.
- City-run power and waterSpringfield adopted a council-manager government in 1990, with a city manager who answers to an elected Board of Mayor and Aldermen. The city supplies its own electricity, natural gas, water, wastewater and sanitation services.
