About St. George Island, Maryland
On July 17, 1776, British forces under the Earl of Dunmore tried to land on the Maryland mainland from St. George Island. Maryland's Flying Camp militia, led by Captain Rezin Beall, drove them back. Beall was wounded in the fight, but the invasion failed.
During the War of 1812, British forces used the island as their main base. From it they raided shipyards and riverside plantations. Many of the island's tall pines were cut down and shipped to England as masts for ships.
