About St. George, West Virginia

St. George is a community of 74 people in Tucker County, at the spot where Minear Run flows into the Cheat River. John Minear, an immigrant from Germany, scouted this ground with his son Jonathan on early trips and then settled here with him in 1774. The place was known first as Fort Minear and later as Westernford.

When the act creating Tucker County passed in 1856, it ordered the county court to meet on land owned by Enoch Minear, one of Jonathan's descendants. The new county seat was then renamed Saint George to honor Henry St. George Tucker Jr., whose father was the man the county itself was named for.

“Among the first improvements in the colony was a mill at St. George, near where the school-house now stands.”
History of Tucker County, 1884
  • The courthouse bell stolenSt. George lost its place as county seat in a fight with Parsons that became known as the Tucker County Seat War. Vigilantes from Parsons broke into the courthouse after dark on August 1, 1893, and hauled away the county records and the courthouse bell. The county government followed them to Parsons, and it has stayed there ever since.
  • A historian born hereHu Maxwell was born in St. George and became the historian of his home county. His History of Tucker County, West Virginia came out in 1884 and recorded the early days of the Minear settlement, including its first mill.
  • A skirmish in June 1861During the Civil War, Union and Confederate fighting reached the valley. The Skirmish at Bowman's Place took place near St. George in June 1861.
