About St. Helen, Michigan
St. Helen is an unincorporated community of 2,735 people in Richfield Township, Roscommon County. It takes its name from the lake beside it, which French voyageurs are believed to have named for Saint Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine. The village was settled in 1870 to house 1,000 lumberjacks, and in the 1870s Henry Stephens built a lumber operation here that was counted among the largest and best equipped in Michigan.
In 1881 Henry Stephens and Sons hired builders for 75 houses and two big mills at the St. Helen station, where a new depot had just gone up. The family firm, run by Henry Stephens Sr. and his sons Henry Jr. and Albert, held three quarters of the pine along the Mackinaw branch by 1888 and ran its own logging railroads out of town. Timber worth more than $50,000,000 was shipped out of the area from 1870 to 1900. After the First World War, St. Helen became the trading center for a summer colony nearby.
- A billion board feetThe Stephens mills were estimated to have turned out more than 1 billion board feet of lumber in fourteen years. Most logs reached them by river, and some lumber left by rail. In July 1888 a new circular mill at St. Helen, able to saw 50,000 feet a day, was nearly done, and a twin was going up at Waters, giving the firm four mills for the next season.
- 80,000 acres soldThe St. Helen Development Company was formed to sell land and build up the area. In seven years it sold 80,000 acres and helped put in more than 30 miles of roads and over 80 miles of fencing.
- A station on the lineThe Detroit, Bay City and Alpena Railroad laid its track through the area with a stop at St. Helen. Ownership of the line moved first to the Michigan Central and later to the Detroit and Mackinac Railway. The Lake State Railway Company operates it today. M-76 also crosses town, and parts of it still carry signs reading "Old 76".
- Charlton Heston's boyhood homeAs a boy, the actor Charlton Heston lived for some years in St. Helen, and the Charlton Heston Academy in town carries his name.
