About St. Johns, Ohio
The Shawnee leader Blackhoof commanded 150 warriors at St. Clair's defeat and fought at Fallen Timbers. Later he and his followers settled at Blackhoof-Town, where St. Johns now stands. He built a cabin on top of a mound and lived there until his death in the summer of 1831.
James Lusk came to the county in 1832 with his father, Charles Lusk, at age 21. That first year he farmed land that later became part of St. Johns. The ground had already been cleared by the Indians.
- Name origin and memorialJohn Rogers, the proprietor, gave his name to Saint Johns when it was founded in 1835. A post office followed in 1838. Today a memorial downtown honors the spot as Black Hoof's final home.
