About St. Matthews, Kentucky

St. Matthews is a city of 17,534 people in Jefferson County, 7 miles east of downtown Louisville. Col. James John Floyd of Virginia had surveyed the Jefferson County area in 1774. He came overland on November 8, 1779, with several relatives and an enslaved Black man. They put up cabins and a stockade, and people called the place Floyd's Station.

The later community grew where Breckenridge Lane, Shelbyville Road and Westport Road meet. By 1840 people called the crossroads Gilman's Point, after Daniel Gilman, who kept a tavern there. When St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, the first church in the area, was finished in 1850, the settlement took its name. The new U.S. post office made that name official in 1851.

  • A national potato centerSt. Matthews stayed farm country well into the 20th century. It grew so many potatoes that it became one of the country's major centers for the crop. The St. Matthews Produce Exchange worked here from 1910 to 1946, and at one point it ranked second among the nation's potato shippers.
  • Streets named for farm familiesStreetcars and automobiles slowly changed the area in the early 20th century. The farms were divided into lots for houses, and the new streets took the names of the families who had owned the land, among them Brown, Rudy, Nanz, Monohan, Oeschner and Stich. The first bank opened in 1905, and the Vogue Theater opened in 1938.
  • A city since 1950The Ohio River flood of 1937 drove many Louisville families off low ground, and many of them moved to St. Matthews. The town incorporated as a city in 1950, partly so it could build a sewer system. In 2001 it took in five small neighboring cities: Springlee, Fairmeade, Broad Fields, Plymouth Village and Cherrywood Village.
  • Holy Trinity, 1882Catholic families from Switzerland and Germany settled in the area, and they finished Holy Trinity Church in 1882. It is the oldest of the city's three Catholic churches, and Trinity High School was founded nearby in connection with it.
