About St. Onge, South Dakota

St. Onge is a community of 170 people in Lawrence County, South Dakota, on the northeast side of the Black Hills. It carries the name of its founder, Pitoche St. Onge, and a post office called Saint Onge has served the place since 1881.

In 1890 the Pioneer Townsite Company surveyed the land here and put up a depot. That depot was the first building in town, and the rest of St. Onge grew up around it.

  • Founded by a French-CanadianPitoche St. Onge, who founded the town and gave it his name, came from French Canada. In 1890 he was one of 1,061 French-Canadians living in South Dakota.
  • A depot came firstWhen the Pioneer Townsite Company laid out the town in 1890, its first job after the survey was building a depot. No other building in St. Onge is older.
  • Said "saynt AHNJ"Visitors often stumble over the French name, but people here say it "saynt AHNJ." The post office spells it Saint Onge.
  • Between two creeksSt. Onge sits between two streams. False Bottom Creek runs past its western side, while Dry Creek, a branch of that creek, bounds the town on the northeast. From here False Bottom Creek heads northwest into the Redwater River, which joins the Belle Fourche River, and that water travels east to the Missouri.
