About Staplehurst, Nebraska

Staplehurst is a village of 236 people in Seward County, Nebraska, and part of the Lincoln metropolitan area. It was born with the railroad in 1879, when thirty miles of new track crossed the county and gave rise to two new towns, Staplehurst and Pleasant Dale. The county history remembered that year as a prosperous one, as farmers and towns along the route looked forward to better freight rates.

  • Founded in autumn 1879George C. McKay started Staplehurst in the fall of 1879, as soon as the A. & N. Railroad was finished through this part of the county. McKay also built the town's first house.
  • Named for Staplehurst, EnglandOne family among the early settlers came from Staplehurst, a village in England. Their old home gave the new railroad town its name.
  • A homestead by 1865Settlers were here long before the railroad. In the spring of 1865 John Durland made his home in the county's "C" precinct, close to the ground where Staplehurst would later be laid out.
  • One precinct paid the bondsVoters in Seward County's "I" precinct carried all the bonds for the thirty miles of track. The 1905 county history thought that a little rough, since the same line built Staplehurst and Pleasant Dale, opened a shipping station at Ruby and brought new life to Milford.
