This vintage linen postcard shows Steele's Motel Court, a roadside lodging located one mile west of Elkton, Maryland, the seat of Cecil County. In the early twentieth century, Elkton was nationally known as a "marriage capital," drawing couples from across the region thanks to Maryland's lenient marriage laws , making it a familiar stop for travelers passing through this corner of the Eastern Shore.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, American "linen" postcards flourished, prized for their textured paper stock and vivid, saturated colors that captured the optimism of the open road. This card was published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work survives today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL.
