About Stetsonville, Wisconsin
Stetsonville is a village of 563 people in Taylor County, Wisconsin. The settlement started in 1872, when the Wisconsin Central Railway laid its tracks through the area on the way north to Ashland. At first the railway stop here had no name at all, only a number, 63. A sawmill soon gave the place both its work and its name, and the community was incorporated as a village in 1949.
- Named for a sawmill ownerIsaiah F. Stetson built the first sawmill in town in 1875, a few years after the railway came through. The settlement around the stop known as 63 was later named for him, and his name is still on the village today.
- Clean water in 2010For generations, families in Stetsonville drew their water from their own private wells. In the 1980s petroleum contamination began turning up in some of them, and the source could not be fully cleaned up. In 2010 the village answered by building a municipal water system. The DNR and the USDA helped pay for it, along with federal stimulus money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and a few other funders.
