About Stockholm, Maine
In the summer of 1909, the B&A railroad built a 48-mile line called the Stockholm cutoff. It linked Stockholm on the Van Buren branch with Squa Pan on the Ashland branch. The railroad paid for it without state or county aid, and it opened a large tract of fine farmland.
Swedish immigrants built up Stockholm, along with New Sweden and Westmanland. Their colony began in 1870 with a party of 51 settlers led by William W. Thomas of Portland, a former minister to Sweden. By 1887 the whole section was called one of the most prosperous settlements in Maine.
