About Stonega, Virginia

Stonega is a coal town of 93 people in Wise County, in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. J.K. Taggart started it in 1895 for the Virginia Coal and Iron Company and called it Pioneer, because it was the county's first commercial mine and coke plant. The company had been held back by the depression of 1893, and it planned the camp as its model coal town.

Workers built Pioneer from local timber on the flat land beside Callahan Creek, squeezed between Bluff Spur and Nine Mile Spur. That narrow valley had to fit coke ovens, railroad tracks, homes and service buildings. The mine opened in 1896, the same year Taggart was killed in a mining accident, and the company's own Interstate Railroad tied it to the Louisville and Nashville line six miles away at Appalachia.

  • Stone plus GapIn 1896 the camp was renamed Stonega, a name built from the words Stone and Gap. It pointed to Stone Gap, the pass through the mountains between Virginia and Kentucky. In the coal country, naming a camp was the operator's choice, and Stonega was the first coal camp of the Stonega Coke & Coal Company.
  • Run by the coal companyThe Virginia Coal and Iron Company owned and ran Stonega through 1902. That year the Stonega Coke and Coal Company leased the land and took charge of the mines, and it kept the town in its hands until after World War II. Neither Stonega nor the camps around it saw a major strike until 1937. The town's post office closed in 2002.
  • One of the earliest coal townsThe Stonega Historic District takes in the town along Callahan's Creek, four miles north of Appalachia and Big Stone Gap, where the coal company kept its offices and supply stores. Virginia's Department of Historic Resources ranks Stonega among the first company coal towns built in the region's mountains, and among those that lasted longest.
