About Stoughton, Wisconsin
Stoughton is a city of 13,173 people in Dane County, on the Yahara River about 20 miles southeast of Madison. Luke Stoughton, an Englishman who had come west from Vermont, founded the town in 1847 on land along the river, where the current offered good water power.
In 1853 the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad hired Chamberlain Cook to finish its line to Stoughton by September 1, then carry it on to Madison. The tracks came through, and by 1880 the village was a busy station with a hotel and three stores. Norwegian immigrants began settling here in large numbers in 1865 and kept coming into the early 1900s, and their heritage still shapes the city's festivals.
“Immediately after purchasing the land here, Mr. Stoughton set to work to improve the water-power. A dam was built and a saw-mill set in operation during the year.”
- From wagons to station wagonsThe Stoughton Wagon Company was organized in 1883, with Mr. Lund elected its secretary. In 1919 the company started fitting custom wagon bodies onto Ford Model T chassis, and by 1929 Ford sold far more station wagons than any other maker.
- Home of the coffee breakWhen T. G. Mandt's wagon factory hired immigrant men in large numbers, their wives took the open jobs at the tobacco warehouses. The women agreed on one condition: they could go home each morning and afternoon to do chores and drink coffee. Stoughton calls this the first coffee break and honors it every summer with the Stoughton Coffee Break Festival and a small parade.
- Syttende Mai since 1967Each year on the weekend closest to May 17, Norway's Constitution Day, Stoughton holds its Syttende Mai festival, with parades, an art fair, races and Norwegian dancing. The Chamber of Commerce has planned it since 1967. A Norwegian TV crew visited in 2004, and their documentary Ja, de elsker aired on NRK1 in 2006.
- A 495-seat opera houseThe Stoughton Opera House seats 495 people and brings in about 30 touring music, comedy and other acts every year. The first weekend in December, the Victorian Holiday Weekend celebrates the city's Victorian homes and storefronts with a ball, carriage rides and a silent parade of decorated fire trucks.
