About the City of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin

Sturgeon Bay is a city of 9,646 people and the county seat of Door County, at the head of the bay that gave it its name. The Ho-Chunk and Menominee lived here first, and the Menominee called the place Namāēw-Wīhkit, meaning "bay of the sturgeon." They signed the land over in the 1831 Treaty of Washington, which opened it to white settlers, and the new community was first recorded as Graham in 1855.

In 1857 the legislature made it the town of Ottumba, but the old name of Graham came back. In 1860 residents petitioned the county board to rename the place for the bay beside it. Sturgeon Bay became a village in 1874 and a city in 1883, the year its police department began. In 1891 Assemblyman Charles Mitchell Whiteside sponsored a bill that joined the neighboring community of Sawyer to the city.

  • A crossing in 1861On November 20, 1861, a settler and his father-in-law reached the shore of Sturgeon Bay. E. S. Fuller rowed them and four other men across in a tiny boat, about 10 feet long and 16 inches wide, that sat just 4 inches deep. The newcomer thought it rode lower than the water, but they made it over safely and found plenty to eat at D. Houle's tavern on the Sturgeon Bay side.
  • A library association in 1866The Legislature incorporated the Sturgeon Bay Library Association on March 17, 1866, eight years before the community became a village. Volunteers formed a fire company in 1869. The city's Carnegie Free Library joined the National Register in 1988.
  • Lumber and lake steamersBy 1881 the Sturgeon Bay Lumber Company was the main lumber firm in the county, milling logs cut along the Peshtigo and Menominee rivers. Its secretary, A. W. Lawrence, had arrived in Door County poor and worked for monthly wages before rising with the county. In summer, the Goodrich Transportation Company of Chicago ran two large steamers that stopped here on the way to Green Bay, Menominee and other ports.
  • The Michigan Street BridgeCrews built the Sturgeon Bay Bridge on Michigan Street from 1929 to 1931. When it opened in 1931 it was the second bridge across the bay, and it carried the old route of WIS 17. The bridge lends its name to the yearly Steel Bridge Songfest, whose past performers have included Pat MacDonald of Timbuk3, Jackson Browne and the Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin.
  • New street names in 1943Sturgeon Bay helped with wartime production during World War II. In 1943 the city gave many of its streets new names, and some of the old names can still be read where they were stenciled into older sidewalks.
