This vintage photo of a U.S. Navy submarine sailor and the boat's mascot dog comes from the Navy's own files at the National Archives. A submariner in a ball cap sits against the riveted steel of the conning tower and reads the comics, and on the other side of the pipe the boat's small dog lies panting in the shade.
About This Historic Photo
The Navy's caption reads: "Life beneath the seas on a U.S. submarine. A submariner reading his favorite comic-strip. The submarine mascot pants in the shade of the conning tower." During World War II, many American submarines carried a dog to sea. Crews gave their dogs identification cards and service records, and one, Garbo of USS Gar, served fifteen war patrols with a star on her collar for each successful one.
KNOWOL restored this print from the National Archives' scan of the original U.S. Navy negative (80-G-335388). It's a square print, printed edge to edge on ultra premium luster photo paper, a popular choice for fine photographic prints. Luster has a finish between gloss and matte and takes a heavy layer of ink, so the tones come out rich and deep.
