About Sumiton, Alabama
Sumiton is a city of 2,444 people. Most of it lies in eastern Walker County, and a smaller part reaches into Jefferson County. The town started after the Civil War, when a mining settlement formed around a railroad line in central Alabama. - Incorporated in 1952The first public school opened in 1940. Twelve years later, in 1952, Sumiton was incorporated as a city, and it is governed by a mayor and a city council.
- The Sumiton Frog FestivalEach year on the first Saturday in October, the Sumiton Frog Festival takes over Main Street with live music, arts and crafts, food vendors and children's entertainment.
- A college campus in townBevill State Community College has a campus in Sumiton. The town's public schools, Sumiton Elementary and Sumiton Middle, field teams called the Bulldogs, and Sumiton Christian School teaches kindergarten through 12th grade.
