About Summersville, West Virginia
Summersville is a city of 3,431 people and the county seat of Nicholas County, just north of the Gauley River. Lewis Summers, a judge, had introduced the bill that created Nicholas County, and when the town was laid out in 1824 it was named for him.
During the Civil War, both Union and Confederate troops camped in Summersville. The Confederate spy Nancy Hart Douglas burned most of the town, and it was rebuilt by 1884. Today the city hosts an annual Potato Festival.
- Old Main, 1914The first Nicholas County High School opened downtown in 1914, in a Renaissance Revival building designed by the Charleston architect H. Rus Warne. As enrollment grew, more buildings went up on the campus, and in 1978 the school moved to a new building north of town. The Nicholas County High School building joined the National Register in 1989.
- A dam dedicated by LBJWork on Summersville Dam started in 1960 on the Gauley River. President Lyndon Baines Johnson dedicated the finished dam in 1966, and the water it holds back forms Summersville Lake.
- The flood of 2016Floodwaters hit Summersville on June 23, 2016, and damaged Summersville Middle School so badly that it was torn down and its students moved into modular classrooms. On June 2, 2020, ground was broken on a new shared campus that will house three schools: the middle school, the county's high school and its Career and Technical Center.
- Four lanes on US 19Once US 19 through Summersville was widened from two lanes to four, Summersville grew into Nicholas County's economic center. Travelers from the north often use the road as a shortcut south.
