About Sumner, Maine

Sumner began as West Butterfield Plantation. Noah Bosworth of Plympton, Massachusetts, settled here first in 1783. Most early settlers were Revolutionary War soldiers from Plymouth County. The town was incorporated in 1798 and named for Increase Sumner, then governor of Massachusetts.

In the winter of 1784, Charles Bisbee sailed with seven children from Scituate, Massachusetts, to Yarmouth, Maine. The family then traveled to Sumner on foot and horseback, following a marked path through the wilderness. They arrived in June and founded the Bisbee Farm.
