About Sumner, Oklahoma

Sumner is a community of 35 people in Noble County, ten miles east of Perry. It took its name from Henry T. Sumner, a Perry businessman, and it grew up before statehood beside good camping ground on Mule Creek. A post office opened on May 23, 1894, and a blacksmith shop, a store and a few scattered homes soon followed.

Mail carriers on the Star Route, the main east-west line for delivering letters, made Sumner one of their stops, and so did the stagecoach running between Pawnee and Perry. The town also sat along the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, and the 1905 Oklahoma Territorial Census counted sixty-four residents.

“From statehood to 1920 Sumner thrived as a service center for surrounding agricultural lands. The town had two general stores, a drug store, the Sumner State Bank, two elevators, a lumber yard, a garage, a filling station, a hotel, a lodge hall, and an American Legion post.”

  • Post office, 1894 to 1957Sumner's post office served the town and its farms for more than six decades. It opened on May 23, 1894, and closed on July 27, 1957.
  • Sumner School still standsSumner School is on the National Register of Historic Places. Along with the Baptist church and the Christian church, the school is one of the few major buildings in town that people still use today.
