About Sunbury, North Carolina
Sunbury grew up around the home of a planter named Granby. He was one of the wealthiest men in Gates County. People named the place for its leading man, so it was first called Granby. Later the name became Sunsbury, and then Sunbury. An old bridge near the village kept the Granby name.
Before the Revolution, leaders of the church at Sunbury included Luke Sumner. He came from the same family as General Jethro Sumner, the Revolutionary hero. Luke Sumner served on the Committee of Safety for the Edenton district.
- A church born from a quarrelSunbury's Christian congregation, organized about 1830, was the only one of its kind in the county before the Civil War. The story was told that it began after two brothers in the Methodist church quarreled over a ladder. Their dispute split several families between the old church and the new one, called Damascus.
