About the Village of Sunfield, Michigan

Sunfield is a village of 518 people on the northwest edge of Eaton County. Settlers began arriving around 1836, when the land was still part of Vermontville Township. A state law approved on February 16, 1842, split it off as a township of its own and gave it the name Sunfield.

The township grew as a place of farms, because it had none of the water power or limestone that built mill villages elsewhere in the county. The village at its center was incorporated in 1899. That same year, Sunfield's Civil War veterans finished and dedicated their own meeting hall.

  • The veterans' hall of 1899Sunfield's Civil War veterans, members of Post No. 283 of the Grand Army of the Republic, built their hall over 1898 and 1899 and dedicated it in October 1899. They filled it with flags, medals, photographs and other keepsakes of the war and of the local men who fought in it. Their hall joined the National Register in 1992.
  • First families in the woodsJoseph Cupp and several friends settled here late in 1837. Mrs. Cupp later recalled being frightened when Native visitors came to her door asking for food while she was home alone. Edward O. Smith followed in May 1838, and James Young moved in during 1841. Many newcomers came in by way of Ionia, where a land office had opened and where they had to go to buy their land.
  • 260 Pottawattomie passing bySoon after Edward O. Smith's family arrived in 1838, his wife watched 260 Pottawattomie people pass the house on their way to reservations beyond the Mississippi. Their clothing looked different from that of the Ottawas she had come to know, and the sight frightened her badly.
