About Susanville, California

Susanville is a city of 16,728 people on the Susan River. It is the seat of Lassen County and the only incorporated city in the county. The settlement was first called Rooptown, after Isaac Roop, an early settler in the Honey Lake District. In 1857 he renamed it Susanville for his daughter, Susan Roop Arnold, who lived from 1841 to 1921.

Freight wagons made the young town a busy stop, because two routes met here. The Humboldt Wagon Road led west to Chico, and the Nobles Emigrant Trail came in from Nevada. A post office opened in 1860, the first in the county, and Roop served as its postmaster until he died in 1869. Susanville was incorporated in 1900.

  • The last train in 2004Trains reached Susanville on a line built by the Southern Pacific Railroad, which the Quincy Railroad later ran. The Quincy Railroad ended its service to the town in 2004. The Susanville Railroad Depot had joined the National Register in 2001, and a Union Pacific caboose now sits on a short stretch of rails beside it.
  • From mills to prisonsFarming, mining and lumber once drove the town's economy, but those jobs faded during the 20th century. The California Correctional Center opened in 1963 and High Desert State Prison in 1995. By 2007 half of the town's adults worked in the area's prisons, a story told in the PBS documentary Prison Town, USA.
  • Bush creek countryThe Northeast Maidu name for the place is Pam Sewim K'odom, meaning bush creek country. The town stands where Honey Lake Valley begins, 4,186 feet above sea level, with Lassen Peak rising 40 miles to the west.
