About Swainsboro, Georgia
Swainsboro is a city of 7,425 people and the seat of Emanuel County. In 1822 the Georgia legislature chose this spot as the county seat and gave it the name Swainsborough. Like many small towns in rural Georgia, it relied on the railroad to reach the outside world in its early years.
That changed in the 1930s, when the town paved many of its streets and sidewalks. Two federal routes, U.S. 80 and U.S. 1, came to cross in Swainsboro, and that meeting point gave the town the motto it still uses.
- Named for Stephen SwainStephen Swain was the state senator who introduced the bill that created Emanuel County in 1812. When the legislature set up the county seat ten years later, it named the new town Swainsborough in his honor.
- Paris for three yearsWhen the town was incorporated on February 18, 1854, it took the name Paris. The new name didn't last. Three years later the town went back to honoring Stephen Swain and has been Swainsboro ever since.
- Crossroads of the Great SouthIn those years U.S. 80 stretched west from Tybee Island, Georgia, to San Diego, while U.S. 1 served as the chief route between Maine and Key West. With both highways meeting at Swainsboro, the city took the motto "Crossroads of the Great South."
