About Swedona, Illinois
Swedona is an unincorporated community of 109 people in Richland Grove Township, Mercer County, and the Census Bureau counts it as a census-designated place. It lies 5.5 miles north of Windsor. The village took the name Swedona in 1869, and it has kept that name ever since.
- Laverne or SwedoniaTwo men put forward names for the village. S. F. Fleharty proposed Laverne, and Leander Chilberg proposed Swedonia. People felt Swedonia was a bit too long, so they cut it down to Swedona, and that shorter name was the one the village adopted.
- The first plat let goThe village's original plat did not last. When the county history Past and Present of Mercer County was published in 1914, it reported that nearly all of that first plat had been vacated in the years just before.
