About Sweet Grass, Montana
Sweet Grass is a community of 65 people in Toole County, on Montana's northern border with Canada. It faces the village of Coutts, Alberta, across the line, and the two places grew up together around their customs stations. Interstate 15, a main road between Mexico, the western United States and western Canada, ends at the crossing here.
“Only the invisible boundary line separates Sweetgrass from Coutts, the Canadian customs station, and they are often mentioned as a single place, Sweetgrass-Coutts. The Stars and Stripes and the Union Jack flutter above the twin villages.”
- One border station since 2004Since 2004 the Sweetgrass port of entry and Coutts have shared a single border facility. Officers of the American and Canadian governments now work in the same building.
- Firefighters from CanadaSweet Grass has no fire department of its own. When there is a fire, the volunteer fire department from Coutts, just across the border, answers the call.
- The end of Interstate 15Interstate 15 reaches its northern end at Sweet Grass. From the border it is 34 miles to Shelby, 108 miles to Havre and 174 miles to Missoula.
