About Swink, Oklahoma

Swink is a community of 65 people in eastern Choctaw County, along U.S. Route 70 between Hugo and Valliant. In the late 1880s David Randall Swink traveled to the Choctaw Nation, married into the tribe and made his home on land a quarter mile west of where the town stands today. That spot became the first townsite.

Swink later divided his land into lots, gave the streets their names and sold the lots, and the town grew quickly. A post office opened on August 14, 1902, with Jasper N. Thompson as the first postmaster. At that time Swink lay in Kiamitia County, within the Choctaw Nation's Apukshunnubbee District in Indian Territory.

  • Named for its founderThe post office, and the town with it, took the name of D.R. Swink, a local merchant who laid out the streets and sold the first lots.
  • Oklahoma's only steamboat wreckOn May 7, 1838, the steamboat Heroine struck a hidden snag and sank in the Red River near Swink. In the early 1840s the river shifted and buried the wreck under a pasture, until 1990s floods moved the river again, exposing it in a riverbank. The Oklahoma Historical Society and Texas A&M University's Institute of Nautical Archaeology excavated it from 2001 to 2008. Its pieces, machinery and other finds are now at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City.
  • A town until 2000Swink had 83 people at the 2000 census, when it was still an incorporated town. It gave up its town government on December 1, 2000, and the census now counts it as a census-designated place, with 65 people in 2020.
