Sydney, Australia 1888

This vintage bird's-eye map of Sydney, Australia was created in 1888 and published by M. S. Hill of Sydney. This restored edition brings the historic City of Sydney map to life while preserving the original linework and the harbour, sailing ships, steamers, wharves, city blocks, parks, and tree-lined streets that fill the view.

About This Historic Map

Drawn from an elevated bird's-eye perspective, this map presents Sydney in the late 1880s, when the city was shaped by its bustling harbour, maritime trade, dense city center, and green public parkland. The view sweeps across a busy waterfront crowded with tall-masted ships and smoking steamers, past tightly packed streets and rooftops, and out to the wooded shorelines and rolling country that ring the harbour.

The map captures the peninsulas, coves, and inlets of Sydney Harbour, the ships riding at anchor and steaming across the water, the busy commercial wharves, the broad parklands and gardens, and the many streets and buildings of the growing City of Sydney that shaped daily life here in the 1880s.

For anyone who has walked Sydney's harbourside streets, watched the boats crossing the water, or traces their family roots to this great port city, this map is more than a historic view. It captures the crowded wharves, the ships under sail, and the leafy parks by the water, and the memories that keep people connected to Sydney.
