About Sylvan, Wisconsin
Sylvan is a town of 516 people in Richland County, in southwestern Wisconsin. Settlers first made homes here in 1853, and a year later the area was split off from the town of Forest to form a town of its own. Sylvan held its first election in April 1855, and thirty-two votes were cast that day.
- A first school in 1855Olive Mathews taught the first school in Sylvan in 1855, the same year the new town held its first election. She later moved to Minnesota.
- The Bear Den cavesA Richland County history described a group of caves on section 34 of Sylvan that no one had yet fully explored. One of them had long been called the Bear Den, because bears used it as their lair.
- A board chairman in MadisonJohn H. Babb was born in Sylvan and worked as a farmer and a teacher. He served as chairman of the Sylvan Town Board and went on to represent the area in the Wisconsin State Assembly.
