About Sylvania, Georgia

Sylvania is a city of 2,634 people and the county seat of Screven County, roughly halfway between Savannah and Augusta. Settlers who came here after the Revolutionary War founded the town in 1790, and they named it from the Latin sylva, meaning forest land or a place in the woods.

Long before them, the Yuchi people lived on this land, and in colonial times some of their Creek allies moved in as well. Once the cotton gin made short-fiber cotton practical, planters brought in many enslaved African Americans to work the fields, and cotton remained the most important crop until late in the 19th century.

  • County seat since 1847By 1830 Screven County had filled with people, and its government sat at Jacksonborough. In 1847 the county seat moved to Sylvania, which still holds it today. During the Civil War, Sherman's army marched through the area.
  • A post office mural from 1941Caroline Speare Rohland created a mural for Sylvania's post office in 1941 under the Treasury Department's federal art program. It showed a family of farmers and the African American farm hand who worked for them. After the local NAACP chapter objected in the 1980s, it was taken down. Found in a post office closet in 1995, it was restored, and Georgia Southern University in Statesboro now keeps it on permanent loan from the federal government.
  • The Azalea and Dogwood CitySylvania sits at 230 feet, a little above most of Screven County, among pines, oaks and dogwoods, with some Spanish moss in the trees. The town goes by two nicknames, the Welcome Station City and the Azalea and Dogwood City, and each April it holds its Annual Livestock Festival.
