About Taylor Mill, Kentucky

Taylor Mill is a city of 6,873 people in Kenton County, just east of Covington, with a strip of land running along the west bank of the Licking River. It takes its name from a mill that James Taylor Jr., the founder of Newport, ran here in the early 19th century. Taylor bought the land from Jacob Fowler in 1810, and the road from present-day Covington out to his mill came to be called Taylor's Mill Road.

Once that road was open, other settlers followed it and moved onto the land around the mill. They cut timber for lumber and cleared fields for farms, and those first homesteads grew into the community that later became the city of Taylor Mill.

  • Sunny Acres joined in 1959Taylor Mill annexed the neighboring city of Sunny Acres in 1959. The name had been confusing newcomers, who linked it with the made-up place in "Shady Deal at Sunny Acres," an episode of the popular TV series Maverick.
  • Winston Park merger, 1972In 1972 voters in both Taylor Mill and Winston Park went to the polls and chose to combine their two cities into one.
