About Terry, Montana

Terry is a town of 562 people and the seat of Prairie County, in eastern Montana just south of the Yellowstone River. Before there was a town, the spot was called Joubert's Landing, after the man who set up a supply post on the river for freighters hauling goods between Bismarck, in Dakota Territory, and Miles City.

The Northern Pacific Railway's transcontinental line reached the landing in 1881, and the town took the name of Alfred Howe Terry. He was the Union general who commanded an 1876 expedition tied to George Armstrong Custer's campaign. Early in the 20th century the Milwaukee Road built its Pacific Extension through town, which gave Terry a second railroad, and the town was incorporated in 1910.

“Terry is the home of Berny Kempton, a former bronco buster and rodeo champion, who entertained Europeans with his roughriding, and astonished Australians by lassoing kangaroos.”
Montana: A State Guide Book, 1939
  • A hotel open since 1902The Kempton Hotel has taken in guests without a break since 1902, longer than any other hotel in Montana. President Theodore Roosevelt and the frontierswoman Calamity Jane both stayed there.
  • Montana's worst train wreckIn 1938 a train on the Milwaukee Road's line wrecked at Custer Creek, near Terry. The Custer Creek wreck is still the worst rail disaster in the state's history.
  • The Terry Tribune, since 1908The town's newspaper, the Terry Tribune, was founded in 1908, two years before Terry was incorporated. It still comes out every week, in print and as an e-edition.
  • Three football titles in a rowTerry holds the only schools in Prairie County. The Terriers won the state football championship every year from 1985 to 1987 and finished runner-up 4 more times in the 1980s and 1990s. Their volleyball teams took state titles in 1988, 1989 and 2010.
