About Tesuque Pueblo, New Mexico

Tesuque Pueblo is a community of 301 people in Santa Fe County. Its people belong to the Tewa group of Native Americans and speak the Tewa language. In Tewa, the pueblo's name is translated as "cottonwood trees in a narrow place village," and in 1973 the pueblo was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district.

The people rebuilt the pueblo on its present site by September 17, 1694. Two years later, when the Pueblo Revolt of 1696 broke out, Tesuque stood apart as the only Tewa pueblo that did not join it.

  • A land grant confirmed in 1858On December 22, 1858, the U.S. Congress confirmed the pueblo's grant of 17,471.12 acres. The patent for that land was issued on November 1, 1864.
  • Camel RockCamel Rock, a distinctive rock formation, rises beside U.S. Routes 84/285. Across the highway stands Camel Rock Studios, which the pueblo owns.
  • A day school at homeTe Tsu Geh Oweenge Day School, also called Tesuque Day School, is a tribal school in the pueblo affiliated with the Bureau of Indian Education. As of 1987, some of its graduates went on to the public middle school, while others went to Santa Fe Indian School.
