About Thatcher, Arizona

Thatcher is a town of 5,231 people in Graham County, in the Upper Gila River Valley between Mount Graham and the Gila River. Latter-day Saint settlers founded it, and the first of them, John M. Moody, came with his family in 1881. Christopher Layton, a Mormon Battalion veteran sent to lead the church's new St. Joseph Stake, purchased two thousand acres, gave the land the name Thatcher and sold it in lots to fellow church members.

Layton also bought a gristmill and laid out roads, canals and houses, and he led the stake from Thatcher from 1883 to 1898. Thatcher was one of several Gila Valley settlements started between 1881 and 1884, along with Curtis, Graham, Central, Layton and McDonald. Together their settlers dug 40 miles of new irrigation canals to water the valley.

  • A college since 1891The church chartered the St. Joseph Stake Academy in 1888, and 17 students began classes in a church room in Central in 1890. The school moved to Thatcher in 1891, and Old Main, with 21 rooms, opened in December 1911. In 1932 the church said it could no longer afford the school, so in 1933 Graham County voters agreed to fund it, and the state ran it as Gila Junior College. It was renamed Eastern Arizona College in 1966.
  • A future church presidentSpencer W. Kimball came to Thatcher at age three, after the church chose his father to lead the St. Joseph Stake. He grew up as an honor student and a star on the basketball court, then worked at the town's branch of the Arizona Trust and Savings Bank. In 1938 the newly formed Mount Graham Stake made him its first president, and he later went on to lead the church.
  • CMOS in 1963Frank Wanlass was born in Thatcher in 1933. In 1963 he and Chih-Tang Sah invented CMOS logic, which became the standard way to make MOSFET transistors, and in 2009 he entered the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
  • A world record in 1931Jess Mortensen, born in Thatcher, competed for Gila Junior College before he set a world record in the decathlon in 1931. He later coached the USC track team to seven NCAA titles.
