This vintage photograph captures The Wedge, a historical plantation located in McClellanville, Charleston County, South Carolina. Built in 1826, the structure was named for its distinctive shape and showcases the architectural style characteristic of the region. The plantation was long owned by Wm. Lucas, the son of Jonathan Lucas, who is credited with inventing the first successful rice pounding mill.

The image highlights architectural features such as elegant balconies, columns, dormers, and spacious porches, all framed by the lush backdrop of Spanish moss and vines that are emblematic of the Lowcountry landscape. The current owners have successfully restored and maintained the plantation, preserving its historical significance and beauty.

This photograph is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, emphasizing the rich heritage of Southern architecture. It was published in Samuel Gaillard Stoneys book, Plantations of the Carolina Low Country, in 1938. The image serves as an educational resource for those interested in Southern history and architecture.
