About Thompson, New York

Thompson is a town of 16,550 people in the southern part of Sullivan County. Bands of the Munsee Lenape lived on this land first. In 1749 two farmers became the first Europeans to settle here, and they began a small settlement close to Dutch Pond.

The town was formed out of Mamakating in 1803. It grew in 1826, when it gained land taken from the town of Fallsburg. Today the town covers 87.4 square miles, and 3.3 of them are water.

  • Named for the county's first judgeThompson takes its name from William A. Thompson, one of the early settlers here. He later became the first judge of Sullivan County.
  • Home of the county seatThe village of Monticello, the seat of Sullivan County, lies within the town of Thompson. The hamlet of Kiamesha Lake sits north of the village on Route 42, and Rock Hill lies to its southeast on Route 17.
  • A synagogue in Glen WildGlen Wild is a hamlet east of Monticello. Its Anshei Glen Wild Synagogue is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
