About Thompson Springs, Utah

The town took its name from E. W. Thompson. He made his home by the springs and ran a sawmill up by the Book Cliffs. The settlement began as a railroad stop on the Denver and Rio Grande Western line, which was finished through the area in 1883. Cattlemen from two counties later shipped their herds from here.

Coal mining in Sego Canyon began in 1911. That same year a short line, the Ballard and Thompson Railroad, was built to carry coal down to the main tracks at Thompson. The mines and the branch line kept working until about 1950.
