About Thornport, Ohio
W.W. Talbott laid out Thornport in 1839. Builders put up a large hotel and warehouse. When the Licking Summit Reservoir improvement failed, those buildings decayed. Thornport became a fishing spot. The Newark, Somerset and Straitsville Railroad was finished in 1871. The town brightened up again, and many new houses were built.
Thornport was laid out as part of a plan to link Thorn township to the Ohio and Erie Canal. A boatway was cut through the Reservoir to the canal feeder. A tread-wheel boat worked by two horses ran regularly on it. It carried out the township's surplus grain and returned with salt, groceries, hardware and dry goods.
