About the City of Thorp, Wisconsin
Thorp is a city of 1,795 people in Clark County, on land the Ojibwe gave up to the United States in the 1837 Treaty of St. Peters. James Seneca Boardman came first, in 1870, and built a log cabin for his family. In winter he split shingles and carried them 50 miles by ox-sled to Black River Falls to trade for supplies. More families followed, and in 1876 the county board organized the township of Thorp, whose 29 voters chose E.A. Boardman as chairman.
The settlement was still called North Fork when the Wisconsin Central Railroad arrived from Abbotsford in 1880. The railroad named its station Thorpe, soon dropping the final e, after Joseph G. Thorp, a state senator whose Eau Claire Lumber Company dated from 1866. Stores, a hotel and a sawmill followed. By 1893 the village had 837 people, along with drunken street fights, loose cattle and pigs, and no way to fight fires, so on May 26 residents voted 120 to 18 to incorporate. A waterworks with ten hydrants came the next year, electric lights in 1901, and Thorp became a city in 1948.
- St. Hedwig's, built by Polish settlersPolish immigrants began arriving in the late 1880s, when loggers had stripped much of the land to stumps and brush and it sold cheap. Many came from around Poznań. They settled east of town, built a wooden Catholic church in 1891 named St. Hedwig's for Hedwig of Silesia, and opened the Poznan School. By 1904 the parish had grown enough to replace the wooden church with the large brick one that still stands.
- Diphtheria in 1879A diphtheria outbreak in 1879 struck the young settlement hard. The J.S. Boardman and C.C. Clark families each buried four children, and the Ephraim Boardmans lost two. When the sickness passed, school district one had a single student left.
- Fifty phones in 1904The Thorp Telephone Company started in 1904 as a private business with fifty phones. Miss Allie Bruno put through the first calls by hand, working a magneto switchboard set up behind the Connor saloon.
- Creameries and Blue Moon FoodsOnce the timber was gone, dairy farms took over the cutover land. In 1907 Thorp Dairy Co. started its first creamery, and by 1917 it was running five more. In the 1930s the People's Exchange Bank failed and many residents lost their savings, though some Polish families who had never trusted banks kept theirs. The growth of Blue Moon Foods in 1939 lifted wages and helped pull the village out of the Depression.
