About Tiptonville, Tennessee

Tiptonville is a town of 3,976 people and the county seat of Lake County, with the Mississippi River to its west and north and Reelfoot Lake to its east. The town dates from 1857. When state lawmakers created Lake County in June 1870, they chose Tiptonville as its seat, though the town itself did not incorporate until 1900.

The Dyersburg Northern Railroad was chartered in 1904 to link Dyersburg with Hickman, Kentucky, by way of Tiptonville. In 1909 the company became the Chicago, Memphis & Gulf Railroad, and a year later its trains began running through town.

  • Surrender at Island Number TenThe 1862 Battle of Island Number Ten ended at Tiptonville, where the Confederate forces surrendered. The Mississippi later wore the island away until nothing was left of it, so the battle's monument stands on State Route 22, about three miles north of town.
  • Refuge in 1927 and 1937Tiptonville sits on a small rise called the Tiptonville Dome, inside the New Madrid Seismic Zone. That higher ground made the town an emergency relief camp when floods swept the region in 1927, and it served the same way again in 1937.
  • A cottonseed mill, 1906 to 1971The Lake County Seed Company opened a cottonseed oil mill in Tiptonville in 1906 and kept it running until 1971. The mill building still stands, though it has been abandoned.
