About Toledo, Ohio
Toledo stands in Lucas County at the western end of Lake Erie, beside the Maumee River. Founded on the river's west bank in 1833, it developed through canals, railroads, glassmaking, and automobile production. The 2020 census counted 270,871 residents, making Toledo Ohio's fourth most populous city.
- Two Towns UnitedPort Lawrence and Vistula joined in 1833 to compete for the planned canal terminus.
- The Glass CityThe arrival of glassmakers beginning in the 1880s eventually brought Toledo its "Glass City" nickname.
- Automotive CenterJohn North Willys consolidated his company's automobile manufacturing in Toledo in 1908; by 1912, Willys-Overland ranked behind only Ford in sales.
- Jeep LegacyWillys-Overland's best-known product, the Jeep, served Allied personnel from World War II through the 1980s and anticipated the modern sport utility vehicle.
- Industrial NamesBirmingham and Ironville took their names from early ironworks located along Front Street and the river.
