About the Town of Clinton, Vernon County, Wisconsin
Clinton is a town of 1,374 people in Vernon County, Wisconsin, covering 35.9 square miles that are almost entirely land. It began in March 1857, when Christiana's eastern half was split off to form a new town called Masterson. Before that year ended, residents had traded the first name for the one the town still carries.
- Renamed in the fall of 1857The new town went by Masterson for only a few months. That fall it became Clinton, a name chosen to honor DeWitt Clinton, the governor of New York.
- First house at BloomingdaleAccording to the Vernon County history, the town's first house went up on section 31, on ground that was later platted as Bloomingdale. That unincorporated community still lies partly inside the town today.
