About the Town of Southampton, New York

Southampton was founded in 1640 by settlers from Lynn, Massachusetts, who landed at Conscience Point on land obtained from the Shinnecock. The town was named for the English port of Southampton. In 1644 the colonists began an organized whale fishery, the first in New England.

The Halsey House on Main Street is the oldest house still standing in Southampton. Thomas Halsey built it. He came with the first settlers of 1640 and was among the earliest English traders with the Shinnecock people.
