About Trenton, Washington County, Wisconsin
Trenton is a town of 4,525 people in Washington County, and the Milwaukee River cuts it in two. Potawatomi and Menominee people lived along that river until the 1830s. In 1836 land speculators, Milwaukee founder Solomon Juneau among them, bought ground here, but nobody settled for good until 1845, and many of the first farm families were immigrants from Germany.
The town was incorporated on March 11, 1848. That same year Barton Salisbury dammed the Milwaukee River to run his feed and saw mills, and the settlement that grew up around them became Newburg, the largest community in Trenton. Dairy farming was the mainstay of Trenton's economy for most of its past, and a large cheese factory on the west side, run by West Bend's Wallau Dairy Company, kept operating into the early 20th century.
- Baptisms through the iceBy 1848 a band of Free Will Baptists from New England had settled in Trenton's northwest corner, near Wallace Lake. They followed the Reverend Comfort Babcock Waller, who had started another Free Will Baptist settlement in Scott, Sheboygan County. New members were baptized by immersion on the lake's northeast shore, and in winter the faithful chopped holes in the ice for it. The group broke up in the 1860s, and some members founded a church in Boltonville in 1872.
- A draft riot in 1862During the Civil War, some Trenton residents opposed the draft. In November 1862, on the day the town's men were being drafted at the West Bend courthouse, a mob broke up the proceedings and the draft commissioner fled to Milwaukee. He returned to West Bend on November 22, 1862, with six companies of Wisconsin's 30th Volunteer Infantry to keep order.
- Myra, Keowns and NewburgBohemian immigrants settled at Myra in the 19th century, and Myra and Keowns remain unincorporated communities inside the town. In the 20th century Trenton gave up ground as West Bend annexed land for subdivisions, businesses and the West Bend Municipal Airport, and in 1973 Newburg incorporated as a village of its own from the town's land.
