About Tribes Hill, New York
Nicholas Hansen's family came from Albany about 1725 and became the first settlers of Tribes Hill. His son Frederick was said to be the first settler child born north of the Mohawk River nearby. A New Englander named Bowen and Victor Putman of Schenectady followed in 1728.
The hamlet was named for one of the Mohawk nation's tribes, or family groups, that lived on the hill. Whether that was the Bear, Turtle or Wolf tribe is uncertain.
