About Tunnel City, Wisconsin

Tunnel City began in 1858 at the railroad tunnel of the Milwaukee and LaCrosse Railway. It grew into a trading point and was once a central market in the blueberry trade. In 1910 and 1911, a second railroad cut straight through the business section. The company bought many buildings, so the village shifted around.

Tunnel City was settled when the railroad tunnel was built. By 1881, it was known for shipping huge amounts of berries. Blueberries, huckleberries and blackberries were the main crops sent out.

  • The town's first teacherMrs. Davenport taught the first school in Tunnel City. She had also taught the first school in Greenfield township, in a log schoolhouse raised on July 4, 1857.
