About Turpin, Oklahoma

Turpin is an unincorporated community of 442 people in Beaver County, in the Oklahoma Panhandle, and it grew up along a railroad that farmers wanted for their wheat. In 1918, growers in Beaver County and nearby areas asked two Hardtner, Kansas, farmers, Jacob Achenbach and Ira B. Blackstock, to build a line across the Panhandle so their crops could reach distant markets. The two men knew how to build a railroad but needed someone to run it, so they turned to Carl Julian Turpin.

Grain shaped the town from its very first sale, because the first town lot sold went to a grain elevator site. The post office opened on April 8, 1925, and the town carried the railroad manager's name. Newcomers from Liberal, Kansas, and from newer settlements to the south helped it grow.

“When I was a kid 20 years old, but married, I used to want to work for a railroad which paid $50 a month and furnished its agents a two-story house on the line, rent, brooms, and matches free. Maybe I still could find something like that”

  • Named for Carl J. TurpinTurpin had worked on railroads since 1888 when he took charge of the Beaver, Meade and Englewood line as its general manager. People remembered him as a stern, well-groomed man who ran the line "by the book." He took no salary for the job, though he received stock in the railroad between 1918 and 1926.
  • From Beaver to Keyes by railWhen the BM&E reached its full length, its trains ran from Beaver through Turpin and Eva to Keyes, where it joined the Santa Fe. Along the way it linked with the Rock Island at Hooker and the Katy at Forgan. The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad bought the line in 1931, and the tracks were abandoned in 1972.
  • Class A championsTurpin Public Schools runs a multi-building K-12 campus that draws students from surrounding farms and from Little Ponderosa and Pheasant Run, two nearby housing developments. Turpin is smaller than Beaver, Forgan, Hooker and Tyrone, but its student body is comparatively large. The school is the community's largest employer and the hub of its activities, and Turpin High School has won class A championships in football, track and golf.
