About Tuskahoma, Oklahoma
The present town of Tuskahoma came into being when the railroad arrived. Long before that, it was the political capital of the Choctaw Nation. As early as 1838, Choctaw leaders first met to make laws for their people in their new home. Descendants of those Choctaws still live in and around Tuskahoma.
Tuskahoma means red warrior in the Choctaw language. In 1882, the Choctaw Nation made the community its permanent seat of government. A two-story brick Capitol was finished in the fall of 1884. Many people called it the finest building in Indian Territory.
- The Choctaw girls' academyTuskahoma was planned as a cultural center as well as a seat of government. The Choctaw Nation's national school for girls, Tuskahoma Female Academy, opened here in 1892.
