About Twin Rivers, New Jersey

Twin Rivers is a community of 7,787 people in East Windsor Township, Mercer County. It lies between two waterways, with the Millstone River on its north side and Rocky Brook, a tributary of the Millstone, on its south. In the 1950s and 1960s, local builder Jerry Finn put up split-level houses at Eilers Corner and Hickory Corner, and after that he set out to find a new way to plan a whole neighborhood.

His answer was Twin Rivers, the first planned unit development in New Jersey. The state Legislature made such a project legal with its Planned Unit Development Act of 1967. Finn broke ground two years later, in 1969, working alongside American Standard, W. R. Grace and Herbert J. Kendall.

  • Streets with English namesFinn drew part of his idea from Sir Ebenezer Howard (1850-1928), the English planner who proposed garden cities. The community's English street names are a reminder of that debt.
  • Four quadsTwin Rivers is laid out in four sections called quads. Quads 1 and 2 sit south of Route 33 and hold the community room, the shopping center and a preschool, while quads 3 and 4 lie to the north. Each quad has a swimming pool of its own.
  • Two neighborhood schoolsChildren on the south side attend Ethel McKnight Elementary School, and children on the north side go to Perry L. Drew Elementary School. Both schools are run by the East Windsor Regional School District.
