This vintage linen postcard captures the U. S. Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, one of the nation's premier military hospitals. Its centerpiece, the tall central tower, was built under the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who took a personal interest in the design and laid its cornerstone in 1940. Set in Montgomery County, the center has long served members of the U.S. armed forces.
From the 1930s through the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, printed on textured card stock that gave their colors a soft, painterly glow. This one comes from the renowned Tichnor Brothers Collection, published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston. KNOWOL has carefully restored and color-revived this edition, bringing back the warmth and clarity of the original.
