About Upham, Wisconsin

Upham is a town of 726 people in the north-central part of Langlade County. It was created on November 16, 1894, and took the name of William H. Upham of Marshfield, who became governor of Wisconsin the following year. U.S. Route 45 crosses the town and runs south 15 miles to Antigo, the county seat.

  • A governor's name in 1894The town was named for William H. Upham, a Marshfield man who served as governor of Wisconsin from 1895 to 1897. Because the town was created in November 1894, it carried his name before he took office.
  • Summit Lake and KoepenickSummit Lake, the town's main community, sits at the northern border on a lake that shares its name. Koepenick is the town's other unincorporated community.
  • Lake countryWater covers 3.6 of the town's 73.9 square miles. After Summit Lake, the biggest bodies of water are Deep Wood Lake, Clear Lake and Greater Bass Lake.
